Volunteering

About the museum

Our Story

Since opening in 1984, the Samford District Historical Museum has relied on the generous support of our local community. Run entirely by volunteers, the Museum showcases the history of the Samford Valley through displays and interactive presentations—many featuring items over a century old. Without volunteer help, we simply couldn’t operate. Our volunteers bring the stories of the past to life, helping to preserve the region’s unique heritage for future generations. Whether greeting visitors, maintaining exhibits, or assisting with special events, every contribution makes a difference. Volunteering here is a chance to connect with local history, meet like-minded people, and be part of something truly meaningful.

The volunteer experience

Why Volunteer?

Our volunteers come from all walks of life, and many have stayed for years—drawn by the camaraderie, the sense of pride in preserving local history, and the satisfaction of giving their time to a good cause. No experience is necessary, just bring along your life skills and a willingness to contribute.

Volunteering roles vary and include administration, grounds maintenance, small engine restoration, general handyman work, reception, cataloguing items, and assisting with group demonstrations. If you’d like to help with school presentations, we’ll assist with training and support you in applying for a Blue Card.

Getting Started as a Volunteer

New volunteers are warmly welcomed and receive a guided tour of the Museum with our President. Wednesday is our main workday, when volunteers help maintain and improve the site—plus we provide a light morning tea and lunch. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, and many have stayed for years—drawn by the camaraderie, the sense of pride in preserving local history, and the satisfaction of giving their time to a good cause. No experience is necessary, just bring along your life skills and a willingness to contribute. We’re open to new ideas and innovation, and we value the fresh energy new volunteers bring.

Onsite safety advice

Operational machinery and other safety hazards are present throughout the site. All visitors are reminded to take care to ensure their safety. Children must be adequately supervised at all times and kept a safe distance from any machinery or likely source of risk to their safety.

Do you have historical resources & can help with research?

We have limited copies of photos, publications, CDs, DVDs and photocopying facilities on site. Charges if appicable, are on request. Or volunteers are happy to assist with family history enquiries.

How are you funded?

Our museum is self-funded and operated completely by volunteers. Funds are raised through our admission fee, good old-fashioned hard work at special events held at the museum, other local events, and occasional grants from notably Bendigo Bank and the Samford Progress Association, as well as state and federal government. Want to support us? Visit out donations, volunteering and sponsorship section. You can also purchase from our shop to raise funds.

Your support helps us offset the cost of:

  • Restoration and preservation of buildings and exhibits
  • Upkeep and general maintenance costs
  • Insurance, record-keeping, stationery and supplies
  • Spare parts for repairs
  • Paint, timber etc.

Your donations are much appreciated.
